Level II Fieldwork

Department of Physical Therapy

Level II fieldwork commences after successful completion of all level I fieldwork and all academic coursework in semesters I-IV. Level II fieldwork involves full-time participation in selected occupational therapy settings for a total of 24 weeks. The purpose of level II fieldwork is to develop competent, entry-level, generalist occupational therapists and to provide opportunities for students to engage in all aspects of the occupational therapy process in a variety of practice settings and age groups. Level II is completed between semester four and five, usually during April - September. A modified lottery system is utilized for placement, allowing the student’s input in choosing potential sites for level II fieldwork. Students are traditionally placed in two fieldwork settings, although may be placed in a minimum of one setting if it is reflective of more than one area of practice, or a maximum of four settings. Students are given the opportunity to have input in their fieldwork placements with actual assignments based on matching the learning needs of the student, the curriculum design of the program, and the type of fieldwork setting. The Director of Fieldwork is responsible for all final placements. Every effort is made to provide each student with a variety of fieldwork placements; however, there is no guarantee for specific placements relative to geographic placement or type of practice setting.

All MOT students must complete level II fieldwork within 24 months following completion of academic preparation. Supervision of level II fieldwork in traditional settings is by a currently licensed or credentialed occupational therapist who has a minimum of one year of practice experience and who is adequately prepared to serve as a fieldwork educator.  In settings where there are no occupational therapy services, a plan is created for the provision of occupational therapy services, including a minimum of eight hours of weekly supervision by a currently licensed or credentialed occupational therapist with at least three years of professional experience.
